Late Autumn in Melbourne evokes a magical romance, sunset leaves blanketing the damp roads creating a quilt of extraordinary beauty, riding a bike that equates or mirrors such an aesthetic amplifies the experience. Life is too short to ride a shit bicycle! We are passionate about our bikes at Mottainaicycles.com we live to restore and service beautiful bikes, whether they are from Australia, France, England or Japan, we fetish-ize bikes and well crafted parts and like nothing more than building custom bikes or introducing you to one of our bikes already restored. We are the antithesis of the many bike sellers whom sell cheap, poor quality bikes with a vintage look from China (aptly called landfill bikes). We make restore and build bikes for people to love and that will be treasured. You deserve a beautiful bike!!! Come in to our shop down the cobble-stoned laneway at 23 Johnston Street Collingwood. We also service and repair all bikes in our workshop. Just rock up and we can fit you in after a little chat about your bike, we are open from 10.30 till 6.30 soon opening at 8am. firstname.lastname@example.org 0448884051 facebook: Mottainai Cycles, vintage bikes Instagram: mottainaicycles thanks and see yah at the shop.

Ok we have been at our new joint for a few months now and have been building bikes and building our new place simultaneously, it’s quite a show, I would like to thank all those who have generously given their time and expertise in helping us get to this point, there is still a ways to go but the shop is coming together well. We have a vision of supreme vintage coolness, a bicycle heavenly realm where bike lovers can quench their thirst and unabashedly oogle and stare at the incredible beauty of bikes made out of love and not just for profit (ie mass produced bikes from China). So if you haven’t visited our new location then you are very welcome to pop in and check out what we are doing …. we consider ourselves an alternative bike-shop …. very friendly/chatty (lovers of bikes) and we do not push sales. New place is in Collingwood 23 Johnston Street down the cobblestone laneway, open everyday from 10.30-6.30 email@example.com 0448884051 We are also on instagram now: mottainaicycles and facebook: mottainai cycles, vintage bikes
Mottainai (もったいない, 勿体無い) (pronounced moht-tai-nai) is a Japanese term meaning “a sense of regret concerning waste when the intrinsic value of an object or resource is not properly utilized.” The expression “Mottainai!” can be uttered alone as an exclamation when something useful, such as food or time, is wasted, meaning roughly “Oh, what a waste!”
Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai visited Japan at the request of the Mainichi Shimbun for an event related to the Kyoto Protocol in 2005. At this time, she learned this word while discussing ecological issues with the Mainichi Shinbun’s editor-in-chief. She was impressed by the depth of similarity between the Japanese meaning of the word and equivalent concepts in English and Swahili concerning people’s responsibility to respect the earth through frugality and conservation. At the Kyoto Protocols, she wore a shirt with the word “MOTTAINAI” written on it in all capital rōmaji, and asked the audience to use the word in their everyday lives. She became a widely recognized celebrity in Japan for discovering and promoting what is referred to as a “MOTTAINAI” movement. Maathai told Japanese TV that she tried to find equivalent words to mottainai in other languages, so as to spread the concept all over the world, but in vain.
She promoted the concept of mottainai as a term that is roughly equivalent to the English phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” or the proverbial phrase “Waste not, want not”. The term is more closely equivalent to the English phrase “What a waste”. Therefore, she promoted the use of the word mottainai as an international expression.

Anyways more about us, we are having a bit of a clearance sale of restored vintage bikes as we have to move soonishly, don’t worry though, we are looking at a few options very close to our current abode in Fitzroy. However it’s always good to try and clear a little stock before a move as to allow space for some cool new bikes. Mottainai Cycles for those that have not visited us is a bike shop that specializes in restoring very good quality vintage bikes, we sell bikes, we build custom bikes and we also restore your bikes as well as servicing all bikes even on occasions a moped or a vintage lawn mower etc, haha I’m sure you get the picture, we love good quality vintage bikes and stuff, we denounce Chinese made bicycles produced only for profit as we all love bikes and cycling at Mottainai and feel cheap mass produced Chinese bikes add no value to the wonderful experience of cycling.
