We are aiming at building up a cheaper range of bikes that require less restoration work but still fulfill our aesthetic and quality of mechanical workmanship, this is one example. This was also a custom build, hence the milk crate.

Come and check out our new bike cave at 23 Johnston Street Collingwood (only a few minutes ride from our last place), in the rear down the laneway. We are open everyday from 10.30 to 6.30. We service all bikes and restore and sell beautiful vintage bikes and of course we also build custom bikes for you to suit any need or desire. We truly love our bikes and this is what we are all about. In the next blog there will be pics of our new digs that we are presently building and designing to be a wonderland of bikes and a remarkable workshop. We are just 50 meters down from the intersection of Smith St and Johnston down the laneway next to everyday coffee/99 problems, Magic Johnston creative offices etc. Come in to show your support for our efforts to recycle and offer an alternative to shit Chinese bikes that become landfill after a year, say NO to fake vintage bikes haha, better get of the soapbox we probably need the timber for our new place. Cheers and ride on. Mottainai Spirit!!!!!!!

Looks like the bizarre Melbourne weather fluctuations have stabilized somewhat, enough to allow even fair weather cyclists a go. Anyways more about us, we are having a bit of a clearance sale of restored vintage bikes as we have to move soonishly, don’t worry though, we are looking at a few options very close to our current abode in Fitzroy. However it’s always good to try and clear a little stock before a move as to allow space for some cool new bikes.                                                                                                                                 Mottainai Cycles for those that have not visited us is a bike shop that specializes in restoring very good quality vintage bikes, we sell bikes, we build custom bikes and we also restore your bikes as well as servicing all bikes even on occasions a moped or a vintage lawn mower etc, haha I’m sure you get the picture, we love good quality vintage bikes and stuff, we denounce Chinese made bicycles produced only for profit as we all love bikes and cycling at Mottainai and feel cheap mass produced Chinese bikes add no value to the wonderful experience of cycling. We are open everyday from 10.30 to 6.30pm at 50 Rose Street or 41 Kerr St (same building). Come in and check out our beautiful bikes or bring in your beautiful bikes for a spruce-up. Cheers and safe riding.  Click on any pic for more detail!!!

Mottainai Cycles are pumped up to invite you to our new shop front at 50 Rose Street, we think it looks pretty radness and we share the space on the weekends with Overdosa (explained above). We are next to the Rose Street Artist markets. Come in and check out our bikes, we are open everyday from 10.30am to 6.30pm. We truly love bikes and also service all types of bicycles for you. If you have an old bike that needs restoring we are happy to perform that service, we have restored hundreds of bikes over the years and continue to do so with great passion and pride. If you love bikes you most likely will dig our place. 0448884051  catrethowan@yahoo.com      check out our facebook page at ‘Mottainai Cycles’!!! Catch yar.

Mottainai Cycles “let us build you a beautiful bike”.

Older bikes are often pretty amazing, hand made or made from high quality materials etc, especially compared to the bikes being pumped out of the factories of China (which have repeatedly being shown to have horrendous working conditions).

We at Mottainai attempt to find as many of these great pre-loved bikes as possible and resurrect them through full restorations, whilst trying to keep them as original as we can. We are intoxicated with the aesthetic and quality/performance of our bikes and feel a responsibility to bring them back to life in a way that holds an integrity and respect for the origins of the bicycle. Most people seem addicted to the concept of the new, however if new means inferior materials and workmanship then why are people buying these products. Furthermore why are so many throwing out bikes that are often far better than those offered in many shops or online.

A good quality bike should last more than a lifetime and can be a beautiful object to pass on to others. We believe that bicycles should not be created just to make profits using the cheapest methods and materials possible but instead created with the knowledge and attitude that riding a bike is one of the wonderful joys in life.
